Environment

The Project Team aims to work in a manner that maximises the opportunities to enhance the environment whilst reducing the negative environmental impacts of the project in accordance with the Costain Group Environmental Policy. An Environmental Plan will be implemented that establishes the arrangements to manage the environmental risks associated with this Project and details how monitoring will be used to ensure that the agreed environmental procedures are adhered to and supported operationally by the relevant documentation.

All contractors providing a product or service will be required to provide evidence, for example a method statement to show how they will control environmental risks that may arise from undertaking their works.

Kingfisher
Kingfishers are often seen fishing near
pumping stations. Sometimes they
will find a suitable hole and make
their nesting burrow behind steel piles.
Grey Heron Grey Herons hunt along the banks of the rivers and drains, where their prey includes small mammals as well as the more
usual diet of fish.

Site activities will take into account the likely impacts on:

Sensitive environmental locations on site (e.g. trees with Tree Preservation Orders)
Potential pollution receptors on the site
Potential areas of legal non-compliances
Specific flora & fauna species requiring protection
The identification of waste streams and the implementation of the waste management plans
Contaminated land areas
Buildings with English Heritage listing
Special designation of areas (SSSI, RAMSAR, Sites of Nature Conservation)
Drainage Points on sites

The Key Environmental Aspects on this contract are:

Water – pollution prevention of main drain and others, ensuring no affect on existing flood defence works
Nuisance – noise, dust, loss of visual amenity incorporating community concerns
Waste management – reuse under exemption of spoil, potential crushing and grading of concrete
Ecology & Natural Environment – although no great crested newts have been found, newt fencing will be erected, nesting birds are likely and fishery concerns regarding the drain and pollution prevention. Designated sites including a SSSI and County Wildlife Site are within the area.

Following our first successful Public Meeting held on the 9th November we are committed to keeping the local and wider communities informed about the contract. Public meetings will be held regularly at the Methodist Chapel in Wiggenhall St.Mary's. Dates for the meetings will be posted on this website as well as locally distributed flyers and adverts in local shops.
